Two weeks before Diwali (Oct 27), there is total confusion prevailing in the market. The trade is not sure which film will release for Diwali! The producers and distributors are not confirming any release date.
As of now, the two films that are sure to hit the screens are Ajit's Aegan and Bharath's Seval. Both the films are being marketed by Ayngaran International, who has also booked theatres for these films.
However Ayngaran is keeping the release date a secret, so that opposition (read Aascar Films Vaaranam Aayiram) is kept at bay. It looks like one of the Ayngaran films will release on Oct 24 Friday and the other on Monday Diwali day Oct 27. It ensures that both the films will not clash, and also take an opening.
Meanwhile the tussle over who will release Vaaranam Aayiram, between the producer and Gemini Picture Circuit (GPC) has been settled. GPC will release the film throughout Tamilnadu, while Aascar will release it in the rest of the world.
Now the trouble is GPC is finding it difficult to sell the film to distributors, as they are asking for a high price, and no theatre bookings has been made so far. The market buzz is that they have paid a whopping Rs 14 crore, to get the Tamilnadu rights of the film, twice the price at which Surya's last film Vel was sold in the state!
It looks like Prakash Raj is going to release his Abhiyum Naanum on his own. He has confirmed bookings for the film in Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai. The film is most likely to release on Oct 24. Prakash is confident that the film will be a winner and he will be able to make a profit from the multiplexes alone.
One time leading producer KRG is looking for buyers for his Guru En Aalu, which he is sure will release on Diwali day. Some people in the trade who were shown a few comedy scenes in the film featuring Maddy and Vivek, say it is a riot and Mamta is said to be looking more glamorous than Nayanthara!
The latest news in the market is that S.J Suryah and his producers are desperately trying to push their Newtonin 3am Vidhi as a Diwali release. But in an overcrowded Diwali market, there are simply no theatres available to screen a sixth film. Still S.J Suryah&Co are sure they will squeeze through, as they feel two of the other Diwali releases may not make it.
